Novels

Novels are one of today's most popular forms of literature and art for their wide variety of genre and diversity of subjects. They are born out of man's desire to tell gripping tales and read interesting stories. A novel is a fictional art, so most critics say that the success of a novel depends on its capacity to make readers drift from reality and believe in what they read.
The word "novel" generally refers to fiction written in narrative style. Earlier forms of novels were considered as short fictional writings about love. Novels are intended for silent or private reading, since they are written with at least 60,000 words. The plots are usually complex, and the character and setting descriptions are likely to be lengthy.
Novels are well-known because of their appeal to the reader's imagination. Since most novels do not include pictorial representations, they are actually heavily dependent on the reader's ability to create images out of the textual descriptions. Most novelists are conscious of their descriptions, putting into consideration that complex imagery tends to bore or disinterest the reader.
Novels come in different genres, the most popular being romance, crime or detective, adventure, fantasy, horror, thriller, and science fiction. Each genre has its distinct writing style and appeal to readers. Romance novels generally cater to female writers, and thus, are usually written from a woman's point of view. Detective or crime novels are usually considered as the more serious type since they are usually about war, murder, and court drama. However, the detective novels are slowly gaining interest among women and young readers with fast-paced and intriguing novels such as Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons. Fantasy novels were believed to be written for children, but some authors such as J.R.R. Tolkien wrote fantasy novels that gained wide adult readership. Likewise, J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series is one of today's fantasy novels that have wide readership and fan base that includes teens and adults.
Although novels are mainly categorized into genres, some novels are further identified as bestsellers. A novel is referred to as a bestseller if it is listed among titles, which are considered by publishers, magazines, and newspapers as "in demand" books, thus able to generate large profit. However, there is no specific amount of sales that indicates whether a novel is a bestseller or not. Novels are also subjected to professional book reviews before they are included in lists like The New York Times Best Seller List.
Although novels are not always associated with their profitability, novelists did not write them for free. The rise of online novels and blog fiction proves critical for today's authors, publishers, and editors. Novels are primarily sold to readers as a form of paying royalties to the creative minds who wrote them. In the case of online versions, readers can easily acquire a copy of a novel without paying royalties to the author. Blog fiction writers, who post their works on the web, do not receive royalties for their writing.
Novels continue to get more interesting as writers persist to find motivation and inspiration to create exceptional stories. Genres are also constantly evolving, giving man the opportunity to explore the depths that this written art has to offer.
